Should You Put Goldfish and Koi Together?
Are you adding a koi pond and thinking of putting koi and goldfish together?
For those that already added the two types of fishes like koi and goldfish together, you may have some issues developing that are not actually showing up just yet. One of the more common problems that people encounter when adding a new pond to their backyard is the problem of poor planning. Or, perhaps it’s just a matter of not realizing just how complicated building a new pond can be.
At times both your koi and your goldfish will have babies. This is where you may begin to encounter a baby dilemma because koi consider baby goldfish as great little snacks. The babies need a place to hide from all other hungry predators. Sometimes you’ll find that these babies, at least some of them will survive to grow big enough to no longer resemble a snack for your koi or goldfish.
Although koi are a favorite of pond building enthusiasts, goldfish are a wonderful pond pet and can bring a lot of colorful joy as well. Koi can be very pricey compared to goldfish and they can grow quite large as well. If you do place koi and goldfish together, you need to consider the size of the goldfish and the type of goldfish too. It just so happens that koi enjoy snacking on the bubble eyed goldfish just as much as those little baby fishes.
If you would like a worry free fish environment. One where all the fish are going to get along, the easy answer is to choose between koi and goldfish. There are pros and cons to each species. The other solution to owning both goldfish and koi together is to make sure your goldfish are as big as your koi. Be prepared to discover that many of your new born goldfish babies become fish food. Avoid placing the types of goldfish in the pond that koi like to nibble on. Namely the big bubble eyed types. And make sure your goldfish are as big as your koi so they do not resemble a yummy koi snack. Or um… you know, the other suggestion of “not” having both koi and goldfish in the same pond.
Many people enjoy having both koi and goldfish together in the same pond. What works for one pond, may not work for another. You’ll find more EZ Pond Ideas and tips at our EZ Pond Ideas website.
