Vodafone’s New Roaming Charges Released
Vodafone, the only UK mobile broadband provider to offer any kind of overseas travel mobile broadband package, has today released details of its all-new overseas mobile broadband tariffs.
Broadband Genie reported yesterday that Vodafone’s existing overseas options, the £60 per month ‘Euro Travel’ and £95 per month ‘Travel’ tariff had been withdrawn by the company, and obtained confirmation that new packages would be announced in the following days.
The new tariffs, which come into effect from 1 July, are worked out according to where you travel, how many MB of data you use, and whether you use a dongle or a 3G handset. The ‘where you travel’ part is based on a zone system, with the zones being: zone 1 ‘Europe’, zone 2 ‘World’; and a slightly confusingly unnamed zone 3 which features places as diverse as South America, parts of Africa and Asia, and Azerbaijan.
And the pricing? Prices are listed per day (midnight to midnight, UK time); and for mobile broadband (via dongle) Zone 1 will set you back up to £9.99 for the first 50MB and the same again for each 50MB thereafter; and zone 2 costs £29.99 for the first 50MB and the same for each 50MB thereafter. Zone 3 is somewhat different, costing £4.99 for up to 1MB.
The new options are ideal for keeping in touch and up-to-date whilst overseas, but as Vodafone point out, the tariffs are designed for checking emails and browsing - not downloading music or movies which eat up mobile data allowance rapidly. However, to avoid unexpected bills when you get home, Vodafone will send out a message once you’re nearing the end of one 50MB allocation, so that you can decide whether to keep browsing. All in all, great news for mobile broadband users, who want to have the opportunity to get online whilst abroad without getting a frightening bill upon their return home.
